Intermediate Football Final (Replay)    Wolfe Tones 1-10 Corofin 2-6

October 11th, 2014

Corofin must wait at least another year to gain promotion to the senior ranks of Clare football after they were edged out by Wolfe Tones by the minimum of margins in the replay of the 2014 Intermediate Football Final, played in perfect conditions in Miltown on Saturday October 11th.

As was the case in the drawn game there was one change in personnel and several positional switches to the Corofin team which lined out in the match programme. On this occassion, Shay Malone, wearing No. 24 started in place of full-forward Eoin Davoren. Malone played as an extra defender in the half-back line, while yet again, midfielder Luke O'Loughlin was positioned at the edge of the square at full-forward.

Corofin got the first score of the game via a pointed free from Damien Ryan. Just minutes later, Corofin struck for a goal with a well worked move which began with goalkeeper Kieran Carkill and ended with Brendan Keane cutting through the Wolfe Tones defence and offloading the ball to his brother John who rifled the ball to the net. The response from Wolfe Tones was emphatic however, as they kicked 5 unanswered points to move one point ahead. Jamie Malone stopped the rot with Corofin's second point, but Wolfe Tones were then awarded a penaly which was duly converted by full-forward Gary Leahy to put Wolfe Tones 1-5 to 1-2 in front. Corofin had a great chance to draw level just before the break when they were awarded a penalty of their own, following a foul on Jason Tierney. However Damien Ryan's penalty was expertly saved by Wolfe Tones keeper  Peter Russell. Half-Time score: Wolfe Tones 1-5 Corofin 1-2.

Jamie Malone got the first score of the second half with Corofin's third point. Great work again by Brendan Keane set up Jason Tierney for Corofin's second goal, which was quickly followed by a Gearóid Kelly point. The momentum was now definetly with Corofin as they turned a 3 point half-time deficit into a 2 point lead, 2-4 to 1-5. However, Wolfe Tones drew level with the next 2 points of the game. Points from Damien Ryan (free) and substitute Darren Malone restored Corofin's 2 point advantage. It was not to be Corofin's day however, as for the second successive game, Wolfe Tones finished the stronger and scored the last 3 points of the game, which was enough to give them the all important lead when the final whistle blew, Wolfe Tones 1-10 Corofin 2-6.

For Wolfe Tones, it's a quick return to senior football, following their relegation last year. For Corofin, it's a case of re-grouping again next year, and coming back bigger and stronger for another shot at the Intermediate title. Meanwhile, for 12 players on the panel, there is also the small matter of the U-21 Championship which kicks off next Saturday (October 18th) with an opening round game against Clooney-Quin. This represents a great chance for these players to get this final defeat heartache out of their system, as they strive to bring silverware of some kind to the village in 2014.
