Senior Football Championship, Round 1

Doonbeg 0-13  Corofin 1-6

August 12th, 2018

Corofin came up just short against Doonbeg in the opening round of the 2018 Clare Senior Football Championship, which was played in near perfect conditions in Miltown  on Sunday August 12th.

Doonbeg got off to the better start and had two points on the board within the opening minutes via Shane Ryan and a David Tubridy free. Damien Ryan got Corofin off the mark in the 14th minute with his sides first point, but Doonbeg hit back with a further brace of points from David and Michael Tubridy. Gearóid Cahill kept Corofin in touch with a fine point from his weaker left foot, but once more the Tubridy duo responded with another brace of points to give the West Clare Magpies a 0-6 to 0-2 lead. Corofin began to settle into the game and when Jamie Malone's run through the middle ended with his goal bound shot being blocked, Gearóid Kelly was on hand to finish the loose ball to the net. Corofin were level soon after when John Keane fired over from an acute angle. The last score of the half fell to county star David Tubridy as his fourth pointed free gave Doonbeg a slender one point lead at the break. Half-Time score: Doonbeg 0-7 Corofin 1-3.

David Tubidy began the second half as he finished the first, slotting over another free. Two pointed frees from Damian Ryan drew Corofin level once more, but Doonbeg began to dominate proceedings and four points without reply put them in a commanding position. Gearóid Cahill cut the deficit to three points late in the game with a pointed free, but try as they might Corofin could not find their way through for an equalising goal as the Doonbeg defence stood firm. David Tubridy then fittingly got the last score of the game as his eight point proved to be the insurance score for Doonbeg, with four points separating the sides whwn the final whistle blew. Full-Time score: Doonbeg 0-13 Corofin 1-6.

Corofin's focus quickly switches to the small ball as the Intermediate Hurlers take on Newmarket in their Championship opener this weekend. The Senior Footballers meanwhile have a derby clash with Kilfenora on the horizon in the next round of the Championship - a game of huge magnitude with the losers being relegated to Intermediate ranks for 2019.
