Intermediate Hurling Championship, 3rd Group Game

Smith O'Briens 0-19  Corofin 0-10

September 3rd, 2016

A strong second half showing from Smith O'Briens saw them overcome an under-strength Corofin side in the 3rd and final group game in the Intermediate Hurling Championship, which was played in a wet and windy Tulla on Saturday September 3rd.

While Smith O'Briens would eventually finish up 9 point winners at the end, the game was very much a close affair in the first half, with the sides deadlocked when the half-time whistle blew. After Smith O'Briens had opened the scoring with a point, Declan Lee levelled for Corofin with a point from play. When Smith O'Briens retook the lead with their second point, Stephen Heagney replied with 2 pointed frees to edge Corofin in front. A brace of points for Smith O'Briens saw the East Clare side retake the lead in what was now becoming a real see saw battle with both sides giving their all. Heagney levelled the tie yet again with another pointed free, only for Smith O'Briens to go back in front with their fifth point of the game. Not to be outdone, Corofin responded in kind, with Heagney to the fore once more with his fourth point to leave nothing between the sides at the break. Half-Time score: Smith O'Briens 0-5 Corofin 0-5.

Both sides pointed frees in the opening minutes of the second half, with Heagney again Corofin's chief marksman. However, it was in the next 10 minute spell where the game was won and lost as Smith O'Briens scored 5 points without reply to take a firm grip of the grip. However Corofin would not go down lightly and points from Heagney (free) and substitute Cillian Clancy reduced the deficit to 3 points. Smith O'Briens  upped the ante once more and a second flurry of 5 unanswered points saw them take a commanding 0-16 to 0-8 lead as the game entered its concluding stages. While John Keane and Fionn Clancy did raise white flags for Corofin, it was goals that were required as Smith O'Briens scored 3 further points in the closing minutes to run out 9 point winners. Full-Time score: Smith O'Briens 0-19 Corofin 0-10.

Smith O'Briens now march on to the Quarter Finals following a 100% success rate from their 3 group games. For Corofin, the 2016 hurling season now draws to a close following one draw and two losses in the Championship.
