Senior Football Championship, 2nd Round

Clondegad 1-17  Corofin 2-5

August 14th, 2016

Corofin's senior footballers have been dragged into a relegation scrap following defeat to Clondegad in the second round of the 2016 Senior Football Championship, which was played in Miltown Malbay on Sunday, August 14th.

Corofin had their best spell of the game in the opening 10 minutes, when despite conceding the opening score to Clondegad, Corofin hit 1-2 without reply - the goal coming from inter-county star Jamie Malone with Gearóid Kelly and Damien Ryan (free) supplying the points. However Clondegad then took a stronghold on the game, kicking 5 unanswered points, before Damien Ryan stopped the rot with a pointed free for Corofin. However, Clondegad would push on to kick a further 4 points without reply to see them lead by 4 points at the break. Half-Time score: Clondegad 0-10 Corofin 1-3.

Clondegad also registered the opening score of the second half, before Corofin had a great goal chance thwarted when Eoin Davoren's shot was blocked by the Clondegad defence. Clondegad kicked 4 of the next 5 points to stretch their lead even further. A superb Jamie Malone goal cut the margin by 3, but Clondegad were always in control of the game, and a brace of points from Podge McMahon followed by a goal from a Gary Brennan penalty saw them hold a comfortable lead. The final score of the game fell to Corofin's John Keane when he pointed in the final minute, but the result was never in any serious doubt in the final quarter of the game. Full-Time score: Clondegad 1-17 Corofin 2-5.

Corofin will now have to regroup as they prepare to enter into a relegation battle along with Éire Óg, Doora-Barefield and Kilrush. Victory for Corofin in their next game against one of these sides will ensure Corofin retain their Senior status for 2017, while defeat will leave just one final chance to avoid the drop to Intermediate.
