Corofin secured a narrow one point win over near neighbours Ennistymon in the first game of the Intermediate Hurling Championship, played in Clarecastle on Sunday May 19th. A goal from a free in injury-time by Damien Ryan gave Corofin victory by the minimum of margins, 1-14 to 0-16. Despite Corofin scoring the first 3 points of the game, it was Ennistymon who went on to dominate proceedings in the first half and they led at half-time by 0-12 to 0-9. Among the scorers for Corofin in the first half were Gearóid Kelly, Stephen Heagney, Eamonn Dunne, Fergus Killeen, Damien Ryan and Killian Neylon. Ennistymon opened up a 5 point lead midway through the second half, but Corofin refused to accept defeat. Points from Stephen Heagney and Damien Ryan reduced the margin to 3, and when Kevin Heagney pointed from play, it left just 2 points between the teams, as the game entered injury time. Corofin were then awarded a close-in free, and with time virtually up, only a goal would suffice to secure victory. Damien Ryan duly obliged by driving the free to the roof of the net to give Corofin a one point victory.
