U-16 A Football Final

Ennistymon 2-10  Corofin 1-7

May 21st, 2017

Corofin were forced to play second best to old rivals Ennistymon in the 2017 U-16 A Football Final, after the North Clare Magpies emerged victorious by 6 points in a final which was played at Cusack Park on Sunday May 21st.

The first half was very evenly contested with only a point separating the sides at the half-time whistle. Corofin had a goal chance as early as the first minute when Killian O'Connor's shot was expertly saved at the expense of a 45 which Corofin took short and resulted in Kevin Keane pointing the first score of the game. Ennistymon then scored three points without reply before a left-footed Killian O'Connor point kept Corofin in touch. Ennistymon were also denied an almost certain goal following a fine save from Corofin net minder Luke Neylon. A brace of points from Kealan Guyler and Colm Kearney stretched Ennistymon's lead to 3 points, but 2 points in quick succession from Robin Mounsey and Ollie Malone reduced the margin to just a single point as half-time approached. The final minutes of the first half saw goal chances spurned at both ends, with both sides hitting the post while Luke Neylon made another super save to keep Ennistymon at bay. Half-Time score: Ennistymon 0-5 Corofin 0-4.

Ennistymon were quick off the blocks in the second half, scoring the opening two points, before Robin Mounsey responded for Corofin with a pointed free. Then came a pivotal moment in the game when Ciaran Boal goaled for Ennistymon, which was followed up with points from Boal and Cillian Rouine. Ennistymon now held a significant 7 point advantage at 1-9 to 0-5. Corofin however refused to surrender, and a goal from captain Cian O'loughlin following a bursting run from wing-back was quickly followed by another Robin Mounsey point to leave just 3 points between the sides. Despite Corofin's brave fight back, a second Ennistymon goal from the boot of Colm Kearney effectively sealed the game for the North Clare Magpies. Ciaran Boal and Robin Mounsey exchanged points in the final minutes of the game, but time ran out for Corofin as Ennistymon had 6 points to spare as rthe final whistle blew.         Full-Time score: Ennistymon 2-10 Corofin 1-7.

Given the long running battles between these sides over the years, we can expect further epic games between Corofin and Ennistymon in the years ahead, with both sides containing quality footballers some of which will no doubt don the saffron and blue jersey in the future.
