Intermediate Football Championship     Corofin 2-10 Kilmihil 0-11

August 24th, 2014

Corofin's hopes of Intermediate Football Championship success in 2014 are very much alive following their 5 point victory over Kilmihil in their third and final group game played in Éire Óg on Sunday August 24th. The concession of a walkover to Kildysert by Kilmurry Ibricance the previous day meant that scoring difference would not come into play in deciding the final placings in the group. Therefore, a win by any margin by Corofin would have been enough to force a 3 way play-off.

Corofin got off to the best possible start, scoring 1-2 to no reply inside the opening 10 minutes. Damien Ryan opened the scoring with a point. Luke O'Loughlin, who had started the game in the full forward line despite wearing the No. 8 jersey, then fisted a goal following a long ball from Fionn Clancy. Damien Ryan then added another point before Kilmihil opened their account with their first point, before adding 2 more points shortly after. Both sides added 3 further points during the remainder of the first half - Damien Ryan (2) and Jamie Malone (1), meaning Corofin had a 2 point lead going in at the break, 1-5 to 0-6.

Kilmihil scored the first 2 points of the second half to draw level. John Keane responed with a point for Corofin before both teams were reduced to 14 players, with Eamonn Malone seeing red for Corofin following an off the ball tangle. Then arrived the games crucial score, when a long range Damien Ryan free was finished to the net by Luke O'Loughlin, for his second goal of the game. Kilmihil were now in search of goals, and they were denied by a brilliant save by Kieran Carkill when he deflected a goal bound shot over the bar. Kilmihil could only muster 2 more points in the remainder of the game, while Corofin tagged on 4 more points through Jason Tierney, Jamie Malone, Eoin Davoren and substitute Michael Kelly to run out 5 point winners, 2-10 to 0-11. This result means that Corofin, Kilmihil and Kildysert all finish level on points in the group. With scoring difference now out of the equation, all 3 clubs will be anxiously awaiting the draw for the 3 way play off to determine which 2 teams will finally emerge from the group and take their place in the Championship semi-finals.
