Intermediate Hurling Championship, 2nd Group Game

Parteen 0-12  Corofin 0-7

August 21st, 2016

A strong finish from Parteen saw them overcome a battling Corofin side in the second group game of the 2016 Intermediate Hurling Championship, which was played in wet and greasy conditions in Newmarket on Sunday, August 21st.

Corofin got the opening score of the game via a Stephen Heagney pointed free. Parteen responded with a pointed free of their own. They were then denied an almost certain goal when Corofin goalkeeper Jason McCarthy pulled off a superb save. Heagney put Corofin back in front with another pointed free, but Parteen would put over the next 2 points of the game to edge out in front. Both sides would go on to register 3 points from play during the remainder of the first half, with the Corofin scores coming from Heagney, Diarmaid Cleary and full-foward Eoin Davoren. A couple of half goal chances did fall Corofin's way, but the wet and greasy conditions made ball handling and control very difficult.Half-Time score: Parteen 0-6 Corofin 0-5.

Just as in the first half, Corofin's Stephen Heagney opened the scoring in the second half with a pointed free to level up the game. However, this would prove to be Corofin's only score of the second half until the final minute of the game, as the North Clare side found scores hard to come by. A great block by Corofin wing-back Fergus Killeen kept out a Parteen goal. From the resultant '65, Parteen scored their seventh point to retake the lead, a lead which the East Clare side would not relinquish for the rest of the game. Corofin battled gamely during the second half, but their inability to manufacture scores proved decisive. Parteen would push on to score a further 5 points without reply. However they would fail to get the better of Jason McCarthy as the Corofin net minder made 2 top class saves to ensure no green flag would be raised by Parteen. Corofin did manufacture a great goal chance in the final moments of the game, but Manus Malone's effort ended up going over the crossbar rather than under. Full-Time score: Parteen 0-12 Corofin 0-7.
