Intermediate Hurling Championship, 1st Group Game

Corofin 0-10 Clarecastle (2) 1-7

May 14th, 2016

A Stephen Heagney converted free from virtually the last poc of the game rescued a point for Corofin in their opening game of the Intermediate Hurling Championship against Clarecastle's second string, which was played in glorious summer conditions in Gurteen on Saturday evening, May 14th.

Throw-in for the game was delayed by an hour due to the absence of a referee. When the game eventually got underway, both teams struggled to settle into the game with both sides guilty of racking up the wides. The first score of the game fell to Corofin when Jamie Malone pointed. Clarecastle replied with a pointed free, before Stephen Heagney scored the first of his 5 points to put Corofin back in front. Two more Clarecastle frees put them a point ahead, but this would be the Magpies scoring quota for the opening half. Corofin finished the half the stronger and points from Fionn Clancy (2) and Heagney gave Corofin a narrow 2 point lead at the break. Half-Time score: Corofin 0-5 Clarecastle (2) 0-3.

Clarecastle got the opening point of the second half to cut the deficit to just a point, but a brace of points from Jamie Malone streched the gap out to three. However, Clarecastle replied with a brace of points of their own, their first scores from play, to leave the minimum between the sides yet again. Following a converted Heagney free, Clarecastle struck for a goal - the initial shot from a 21 metre free was kept out by the Corofin rearguard but the rebound was finished to the net following a goalmouth scramble. Momentum was now firmly with the Magpie's and they added a point almost instantly to open up a two point lead. However Corofin refused to accept defeat, and two frees from scorer in chief Heagney levelled up the game, with the equalising point being struck from just outside the 65 metre line in the dying seconds of injury time. Full-Time score: Corofin 0-10 Clarecastle (2) 1-7.
