Intermediate Football Championship     Kildysert 0-14 Corofin 1-7

August 9th, 2014

Corofin's push for a place in the semi-finals of the 2014 Intermediate Football Championship took a setback in Gurteen when they were defeated by 4 points by Kildysert in their second group game on Saturday August 9th. Corofin's final group game against Kilmihil is now looking like a must-win game for Corofin, if they are to remain in the hunt for Intermediate championship honours.

Kildysert were up for this game following their opening game defeat to Kilmihil. They took the lead in the opening minutes with a point, but a Jamie Malone goal put Corofin in front shortly after. This proved to be only a minor setback for Kildysert however, who went on to kick 4 points withouut reply, before Gearóid Kelly stopped the rot by firing over Corofin's first point. Kildysert's hard hitting saw a flurry of yellow cards been dished out but it was Corofin who ended up been reduced to 14 men when Damien Ryan was given a yellow and a black card in quick succession. Corofin failed to score for the remainder of the half, while Kildysert tagged on 3 more points to go in at the break leading by 4 points, 0-8 to 1-1.

Kildysert began the second half as they ended the first by kicking 3 points without reply to stretch their lead to 7 points. Corofin did rally to reduce the deficit to 3 points, with points from Gearóid Kelly, Stephen Heagney, Colm Rice and Luke O'Loughlin, but this would be the closest Corofin would get to Kildysert, as the extra man advantage proved a telling factor. Kildysert closed out the game to win by 4 points and are now very much back in the race for a place in the semi-finals while Corofin must now regroup and prepare for their vital last group game against Kilmihil, where anything but a victory will surely end Corofin's hopes of Intermediate Championship success.
