Intermediate Football Championship, 3rd Group Game

Kilmihil 0-16 Corofin 1-12

August 30th, 2015

Corofin have progressed to the semi-finals of the 2015 Intermediate Football Championship, despite suffering a 1 point loss at the hands of Kilmihil, in their third and final group game which was played in Miltown Malbay on Sunday, August 30th.

Kilmihil had already booked their spot in the semi-finals following two wins from their opening two games. For Corofin, a draw would have been sufficient to guarantee their spot in the semi's. Even a loss might not have seen Corofin eliminated, depending on the outcome of the other group game between Naomh Eoin and Liscannor.

Kilmihil got the opening score of the game, a point inside the first minute, which was replied to by a pointed free from Jamie Malone. Kilmihil got the next 2 points of the game, but then Corofin got into a mini scoring burst, with 4 points in succession through Shay Malone, Stephen Heagney, Jamie Malone and John Keane. However, not to be outdone, it was then Kilmihil's turn to score 4 points in succession, and this was enough to give Kilmihil a 2 point cushion going in at the break. Half-Time score: Kilmihil 0-7 Corofin 0-5.

Martin O'Leary scored the opening point of the second half to extend Kilmihil's lead to 3. Three points in a row from Jamie Malone tied up the game at 8 points a piece. Kilmihil then pushed out in front on the scoreboard yet again with a brace of points, before the only goal of the game arrived. A high ball into the Kilmihil square broke to Jamie Malone who finished to the net. A point from Jamie soon after now saw Corofin lead by 2 points. Another brace of points from Kilmihil levelled up the game once more. Corofin replied with a brace of points from Jason Tierney and John Keane. Kilmihil then had a great goal chance only to be foiled by a fine save from veteran Corofin goal-keeper Kieran Carkill. In what was now becoming a real see-saw contest, Kilmihil drew level with 2 quick points. Corofin centre-back Brendan Keane then put over the score of the game, with an inspirational long range point from out near the sideline. However, it was Kilmihil who got inspiration as they were now 1 point in arrears with the clock ticking down towards the final whistle, and they put over the final 2 points of the game to retake the lead. Corofin's captain and scorer in chief Jamie Malone did have one last chance to level the game, but his long range free drifted wide. Full-Time score: Kilmihil 0-16 Corofin 1-12.

Despite losing this game, Corofin are in the semi-finals following Naomh Eoins victory over Liscannor. Corofin will now play neighbours Kilfenora who finished top of their group with an 100% record, while Kilmihil will take on 2nd placed team Clarecastle.
