Intermediate Football Championship, 1st Group Game

Corofin 1-12 Naomh Eoin 1-12

July 26th, 2015

A Naomh Eoin goal deep into injury time earned the team from Loop Head a share of the spoils against Corofin, in the first group game in the Intermediate Football Championship, which was played in wet conditions in Cooraclare on Sunday, July 26th.

Two points from Clare Senior player Jamie Malone in the opening minutes got Corofin off the mark, but Naomh Eoin would then go on to score four points without reply to take a two point advantage. Naomh Eoin would have been even further ahead, were it not for 2 fine saves by Corofin goalkeeper Kieran Carkill. Points from Stephen Heagney and Brendan Keane stopped the rot, but a fifth Naomh Eoin point meant that they held a one point lead at the break. Half-Time score: Naomh Eoin 0-5 Corofin 0-4.

The second half would prove to be a real ding dong battle, with neither team been able to build up a substantial lead. Corofin got off to the perfect start, with two quick fire points from Jamie Malone and John Keane. A Corofin goal soon followed, after a sublime pass from Darren Malone found his brother Jamie who coolly finished to the net. Corofin now held a 4 point advantage, but they weren't able to kick on, as Naomh Eoin scored the next four points of the game to level the game. Stephen Heagney replied with a point for Corofin, but again Naomh Eoin refused to wilt and put over a further two points of their own to retake the lead. Both teams then exchanged points, before Corofin went on another mini scoring spree scoring four consecutive points via the boot of Stephen Heagney, Jamie Malone (free), Colm Rice and Darren Malone (free). This gave Corofin a 3 point advantage yet again, and with the game entering injury time, the vast majority of the crowd felt that this would be sufficient to earn victory for last years beaten finalists. However there was still time for one final twist. When a Naomh Eoin free dropped in around the Corofin square, it was duly finished to the net to leave the sides deadlocked as the final whistle blew just moments later.   Full-Time score: Corofin 1-12 Naomh Eoin 1-12.
