Senior Football Championship, Round 3

Éire Óg 1-9  Corofin 1-4

September 2nd, 2017

Éire Óg eventually overcame the challenge of Corofin in Round 3 of the 2017 Senior Football Championship which was played in wet and greasy conditions in Gurteen on Saturday September 2nd.

Éire Óg played with the aid of the breeze in the first half but it was Corofin who got the games opening score with a pointed free from Damien Ryan. Éire Óg responded with three consecutive points. Eoin Davoren stopped the rot with a fine point from play but Éire Óg moved up the gears and scored 1-3 without reply with the goal coming from inter-county player Ciarán Russell. Damien Ryan got the last score of the first half with his second pointed free but the Townies still held a rather sizeable lead when the half time whistle blew. Half-Time score: Éire Óg 1-6 Corofin 0-3.

On the resumption, Shane Daniels extended Éire Óg's lead with a pointed free, only to see Damien Ryan reply with a point from play. Corofin were then handed a lifeline when a 45 kicked by Ryan ended up in the back of the Éire Óg net to leave just 3 points between the sides. Both sides had chances to convert their second goal but efforts from Gearóid Kelly and Eimhin Courtney were thwarted by the respective net-minders. Corofin were unable to reduce the margin any further and a brace of Éire Óg points from Conal O'hAiniféin and Eimhin Courtney gave the Townies a 5 point lead which they would hold for the remainder of the game. Full-Time score: Éire Óg 1-9 Corofin Corofin 1-4.

Despite bowing out of the Championship there is still much more football to be played by Corofin in 2017, with the team now entering the Senior B competition, while the U-21 Championship is due to take place in October/November.
