Intermediate Hurling Championship, Round 1

Corofin 3-20  Newmarket(2) 2-8

August 18th, 2018

A strong second half showing was the catalyst for Corofin progressing to the second round of the 2018 Clare Intermediate Hurling Championship, easily dispatching Newmarket's second string in the Round One encounter which was played in Clareabbey on Saturday August 18th.

Corofin were slow to settle into the game and it was Newmarket who bossed proceedings in the early stages. The 'Blues' led by 2-2 to 0-2 by the 15th minute, with Jamie Malone and Gearóid Cahill registering the points for Corofin. As the first half entered its concluding stages, Corofin came more into the game and outscored their opponents by 1-4 to 0-2. County football star Jamie Malone showed he's just as effective with the small ball as he is with the big ball, scoring 1-3 in the opening half. Further points from Cahill and Eoin Davoren meant their was just the minimum between the sides when the half-time whistle blew, with Corofin to have the wind advantage in the second half. Half-Time score: Newmarket(2) 2-4 Corofin 1-6.

Corofin began the second half in determined fashion with midfielder Gearóid Kelly pointing a loose ball seconds after the throw-in. Corofin began to move up the gears and the introduction of substitute Kevin Heagney proved an inspired move, with Heagney helping himself to 2-3 from play as Corofin began to work the umpires. Corofin's attack was now in full flow with Malone, Cahill, Davoren and Kelly all adding to their scoring tallies while Killian Neylon and Damian Ryan also got in on the scoring act with points from play and frees respectively. Newmarket only managed four points in the second half as the Corofin attack ran rampant. Full-Time score: Corofin 3-20 Newmarket 2-8.

Corofin had the luxury of emptying the bench in order to give some players some well earned rest ahead of what will be a gruelling fixture schedule in the coming weeks with Intermediate Hurling and Senior Football fixtures coming thick and fast. Corofin's next outing will be against Inagh-Kilnamona's second team this coming weekend (August 25th/26th), with the winners progressing to the Quarter Finals.
