U-13 A Hurling Final

Corofin 2-5  Inagh-Kilnamona 0-7

September 20th, 2015

Corofin's U-13 hurlers created their own bit of history when they won the clubs first ever 'A' Championship, after defeating Inagh-Kilnamona in a pulsating final which was played in wet and greasy conditions in Clarecastle on Sunday evening, September 20th.

Considering the conditions, both teams served up a brilliant spectacle of hurling, with the result in doubt right down to the final minutes. The first 10 minutes proved to be a cagey affair, with both teams struggling to hit the target. It took until the 10th minute for the first score of the game to arrive, when Inagh-Kilnamona's Jason Downes raised the first white flag. Downes added a second point soon after to double his sides lead, before Conor Leen got Corofin off the mark with a point from a free. Inagh-Kilnamona's Eoghan Foudy restored his sides two point advantage with a pointed free. Then arrived the games first real goal chance, when a shot from Inagh-Kilnamona's Keith Barry was expertly saved by Corofin net-minder James Collins. This brilliant save was the catalyst for Corofin to up the ante and they soon began to take a stranglehold on the game. Conor Leen converted his second pointed free and when Diarmuid Cahill was fouled when through on goal, Killian O'Connor duly dispatched the resultant penalty to the net. Centre-Back Conor Leen was Seán McMahon like with his free-taking, and he converted his third long-range free to add to Corofin's lead. With the half-time whistle fast approaching, Corofin were still not finished and a great run and pass from Diarmuid Cahill found Killian O'Connor who blasted to the net for his second goal of the game. Corofin were now on a roll, and if anything the half-time whistle came too soon, but when it did sound, Corofin held a commanding two goal lead. Half-Time score: Corofin 2-3 Inagh-Kilnamona 0-3.

Inagh-Kilnamona's Eoghan Foudy got the first score of the second-half with his second pointed free and this was replied to with a point from play by Killian O'Connor. It was now Inagh-Kilnamona's turn to exert their dominance on the game, and Eoghan Foudy displayed his own free-taking prowess with three more pointed frees to reduce the deficit to a single goal. A Diarmuid Cahill point stopped the rot for Corofin when he converted his own free after been fouled when through on goal. With the game now entering its concluding stages and Corofin 4 points to the good, Inagh-Kilnamona threw everything bar the kitchen sink at their opponents. Ball after ball was dropped into the Corofin square, but to quote legendary TV pundit Cyril Farrell, this was akin to 'throwing nuts to a monkey' with each ball been hooked, blocked and cleared by the Corofin defence. After Corofin goal-keeper James Collins produced a second stunning save in injury time, referee John Dolan blew the whistle for full-time to signal great scenes of celebration for the team in red and white. Full-Time score: Corofin 2-5 Inagh-Kilnamona 0-7.

Corofin captain Colin Farr was presented with the cup by Bord na nÓg Iomáint Chairman Joe Pender amid joyous scenes. Colin praised his fellow players and the management team for their commitment as well as paying tribute to worthy opponents Inagh-Kilnamona. The team, management and supporters then proceeded to make their way back the Sportshall in Corofin for some well deserved refreshments.
