U-21 'A' Hurling Championship, Preliminary Round

Kilmaley 1-20  Corofin/Ruan 0-5

February 28th, 2016

The amalgamation of Corofin and Ruan proved no match for 2015 winners Kilmaley when they met in the opening round of the U-21 'A' Hurling Championship, which was played under lights in Gurteen on Sunday evening,February 28th. Corofin/Ruan's cause wasn't helped by the absence of several players due to a combination of injury, suspension and players out of the country. In addition, Cian O'Dea was also forced to play his second full game in the matter of hours, having already starred for the Clare senior footballers in their league victory over Limerick in Newcastle West earlier that evening. Incidentally Cian would end up playing a fine game for the amalgamation outfit.

Kilmaley got the opening score of the game through a pointed free. There then followed a lengthy stoppage in play due to a power failure in one of the floodlights. When played eventually resumed, Kilmaley kicked on on the scoreboard and they had 7 points registered before Corofin/Ruan opened their account through a Michael Lyons pointed free. Kilmaley added 3 further points during the remainder of the first half, while 2 points from Eoin Davoren, one of which was a fine score from distance, kept Corofin/Ruan within 7 points of their opponents. Half-Time score: Kilmaley 0-10 Corofin/Ruan 0-3.

Kilmaley's dominance continued after the re-start, hitting the first 4 points of the second half. Michael Lyons stopped the rot with a pointed free. Corofin/Ruan then had a great chance for a goal but were foiled by the Kilmaley defence. The 2015 champions immediately moved the ball up the field and within seconds the ball was in the back of the Corofin/Ruan net to complete a six point swing. With the game now all but over, the contest petered out during the final stages. Both teams finished the game with 14 men after having players dismissed for 2 yellow card offences, Eoin Clancy being the Corofin/Ruan player whose game ended prematurely. Full-Time score: Kilmaley 1-20 Corofin/Ruan 0-5.
