Intermediate Football Championship     Corofin 2-12 Kildysert 1-14

August 30th, 2014

Corofin are through to the semi-final of the 2014 Intermediate Football Championship following an epic one point extra time victory over Kildysert. By winning this play-off fixture, Corofin now progress as group winners and meet Éire Óg in the semi-final, while Kildysert must now play-off again against Kilmihil for the right to meet Wolfe Tones in the second semi-final.

This was a real see-saw affair, with the lead changing hands on numerous occassions throughout the game. Corofin got off to the better start, scoring the first 2 points with Damien Ryan converting 2 placed balls. However, Kildysert then responded with the next 3 points to go in front for the first time. Two more points from Damien Ryan put Corofin back in the lead again, before Kildysert levelled to make it 4 points apiece. A point each from Eoin Davoren and Damien Ryan left 2 points between the sides at the break, Corofin 0-6 Kildysert 0-4.

Corofin got off to the best possible start in the second half, with a goal after 30 seconds from full-forward Eoin Davoren, following a strong run down the middle by Jamie Malone. Corofin were now 5 points ahead and were in a strong position. However, they took their foot off the gas and allowed Kildysert back into the game by conceding 4 points in a row. A pivotal moment in the game arrived when Kildysert were reduced to 14 players following an off the ball infringement. Damien Ryan then got Corofin back on track with 3 points in succession. Again however, Kildysert refused to wilt, and they scored 1-2 without reply to take the lead, 1-10 to 1-9, the goal coming following confusion in the Corofin square. The game was then held up for close on 30 minutes follwing an injury to Corofin defender Colm Rice. When play eventually resumed, two points from the boot of Jamie Malone put Corofin back in front yet again, but Kildysert scored a late point to level the game and force extra-time. Corofin 1-11 Kildysert 1-11.

Kildysert scored the opening point in the first period of extra-time. Damien Ryan levelled matters yet again, with his 5th pointed free and his 9th point in total. Kildysert scored a point either side of the extra-time interval to take a 2 point lead, 1-14 to 1-12. Kildysert were now looking good to emerge victorious, but Corofin were not done yet. Jason Tierney weaved through the Kildysert defence, and although his goal-bound shot was saved, John Keane was on hand to finish the rebound to the net. There was still time for another Kildysert attack, but Corofin's defence held firm to emerge winners by the minimum of margins, Corofin 2-12 Kildysert 1-14.
