Senior Football Championship, Round 2

Corofin 1-13  Wolfe Tones 0-10

August 19th, 2017

Corofin progressed to Round 3 of the 2017 Senior Football Championship following a comprehensive 6 point victory over Wolfe Tones in a Round 2 tie which was played in windy conditions in Gurteen on Saturday August 19th.

Corofin got off to a perfect start with a pointed free from Damien Ryan inside the first minute. Further points followed from Fionn Clancy and Ryan before Gearóid Kelly scored what would prove to be the games only goal after been put through by John Keane. Kelly quickly added a point to his tally to give Corofin a commanding lead at  1-4 to 0-0. Wolfe Tones got off the mark with a point from the boot of Ross O'Connor and they were almost in for a goal only for an Aidan McMahon effort to rocket inches wide of the post. Two pointed Ryan frees put Corofin back on course but Wolfe Tones responded with a brace of points as they sought to keep in touch with their opponents. The last score of the first half went Corofin's way as Jamie Malone scored the first of his 3 points to give his side a commanding 7 point lead at the break. Half-Time score: Corofin 1-7 Wolfe Tones 0-3.

Just as in the first half, Corofin were quick off the mark on the scoreboard in the second half with points from Gearóid Kelly and Damien Ryan. Wolfe Tones responded with 2 points of their own. Damien Ryan then added his sixth and seventh points of the game, but again Wolfe Tones replied, with points from Gary Leahy (free) and Dean Devanney. A brace of points from Jamie Malone gave Corofin a nine point advantage as the game entered its closing stages. Corofin seemed to take their foot off the gas during the final minutes of the game as Wolfe Tones scored 3 points without reply to reduce the margin to six points. However it was goals rather than points that Wolfe Tones required as when the final whistle blew Corofin were 6 points to the good and through to Round 3 of the Championship, while Wolfe Tones now finds themselves in the unwanted position of a relegation semi-final. Full-Time score: Corofin 1-13 Wolfe Tones 0-10.
