U-21 'B' Football Final

St. Joseph's Doora-Barefield 3-6  Corofin 0-7

November 21st, 2015

Corofin failed in their bid to add the U-21 Football Championship to their Intermediate and Division 3 League titles already won this year, when they were defeated by Doora-Barefield in the U-21 'B' Final which was played in a cold and wet Éire Óg on Saturday, November 21st.

In what was atrocious conditions for a game of football, the final proved to be a low scoring affair, with both teams struggling to keep possession of the football which was akin to holding onto a bar of soap while playing on an ice rink. Corofin started the brighter and they got the first score of the contest following a fine individual point from Damien O'Loughlin. The next score came slightly against the run of play, when Doora-Barefield goaled via centre-forward Finn O'Reilly. Damien O'Loughlin, who was causing big problems for the Doora-Barefield full-back line, did have a chance to reply in kind, but his goal bound effort was saved. Corofin had the majority of the possession for much of the first half, but they were unable to reflect their dominance on the scoreboard. They scored three further first half points via frees from Shay Malone (2) and Jamie Malone, while Doora-Barefield scored their first and only point of the first half to leave the half-time score: Doora-Barefield 1-1 Corofin 0-4.

Corofin had a goal chance inside the first minute of the re-start but Eoin Davoren's shot went the wrong side of the post.Three points in a row from Doora-Barefield saw them edge out in front, while Shay Malone's third pointed free kept Corofin in touch. However when full-forward Aoran Landy scored Doora-Barefield's second goal from the penalty spot, the game seemed to turn very much in their favour. The next 4 points of the game were shared between the 2 sides, with Jamie Malone and Damien O'Loughin pointing for Corofin. However as the game entered its concluding stages, it was goals that Corofin required, but they were unable to find their way through the Doora-Barefield rearguard. A second goal from Aoran Lundy in injury time put the final nail in Corofin's coffin, and when the final whistle sounded just seconds later, Doora-Barefield were 8 points clear on the scoreboard. Full-Time score: Doora-Barefield 3-6 Corofin 0-7.

While this final loss was disappointing, Corofin can look back on the 2015 year with great satisfaction with the winning of the Intermediate Football Championship and Division 3 League. With the vast majority of this team eligible for the U-21 grade again next year, Corofin will be hoping to go one step further in 2016.
