U-21 Football Semi-Final

Corofin 2-12  Naomh Eoin/O'Currys 2-10

November 7th, 2015

Corofin's adult footballers will appear in their 3rd final of the 2015 playing season following a 2 point victory over amalgamation side Naomh Eoin/O'Currys in the semi-final of the U-21 B Football Championship, which was played in windy Ennistymon on Saturday, November 7th.

Playing with the aid of a strong breeze in the first half, Corofin were quick off the mark with Jamie Malone pointing from play inside the first minute. A brace of points from Naomh Eoin/O'Currys saw them take the lead, before Corofin hit 1-3 without reply - the goal coming after Damien O'loughlin fisted a high ball from a Jamie Malone free to the net. Shay & Jamie Malone from frees, and Eoin Davoren from play were the point scorers. Another brace of points from Naomh Eoin/O'Currys reduced the deficit to a goal, before Jamie Malone replied in kind with 2 pointed frees to extend the lead back out to 5. Even though Corofin were now beginning to dominate, Naomh Eoin/O'Currys worked their way through for a goal after carving open the Corofin defence to leave just 2 points between the sides. There was time for both sides to add another point before the half-time break, with Jamie Malone scoring his 5th point of the first half. Half-Time score: Corofin 1-7 Naomh Eoin/O'Currys 1-5.

The first 5 minutes of the second half would prove to be the most crucial period of the game, with Damien O'Loughlin raiding for 1-1 to put Corofin very much in the driving seat. The goal could be regarded as being on the fortuitous side after O'Loughlin's effort on goal took a wicked deflection off a Naomh Eoin/O'Currys defender. The game then switched into stop-start mode with the referee having to stop play on numerous occasions to award frees and to dish out yellow cards. Corofin would never edge any further than 6 ahead on the scoreboard. Every time they would raise a white flag, the men from the Peninsula would reply in kind. Colin Vaughan, Damien O'Loughlin and Eoin Davoren all kicked further points for Corofin and with the game entering injury time, Corofin were 5 points clear. Naomh Eoin/O'Currys did manage to get through for a second goal, but as it was virtually the last kick of the game,it was too little too late, with Corofin emerging victorious on a scoreline of 2-12 to 2-10.

Corofin will now take on Doora-Barefield in the U-21 B Final, their third final in 2015 following their appearance in the Intermediate League and Championship finals earlier in the year. However, any talk of an U-21 Final is now firmly put on hold, as attention now switches to next Saturday's (Nov 14th) Munster Intermediate Semi-Final, with Corofin travelling into the lions den to take on the might of St. Mary's Cahersiveen of Kerry.
