Senior Football Championship, Round 2

Corofin 2-18  Kilfenora 1-9

September 1st, 2018

A dominant second half performance saw Corofin overcome the challenge of neighbours Kilfenora in Round 2 of the 2018 Clare Senior Football Championship, which was played in Ennistymon on Saturday September 1st.

The opening half was a keenly tested affair with little separating the sides throughout. Damian Ryan (free) and Gearóid Cahill kicked early points for Corofin with Micheál Duffy getting Kilfenora off the mark with a pointed free. A second Ryan free followed by a Eoin Davoren point streched Corofin's lead, but Kilfenora responded with a brace of points of their own from Duffy (free) and Cian O'Dea. Jamie Malone then kicked the first of his nine points with Duffy keeping Kilfenora in touch with yet another pointed free. Corofin scored four of the final six points of the half via Malone (3) and Cahill, while Duffy and O'Dea pointed for Kilfenora to leave just 3 points between the sides at the interval. Half-Time score: Corofin 0-9 Kilfenora 0-6.

Corofin began the second half in determined fashion with both Seán O'Brien and Damien O'Loughlin fisting balls over the bar inside the opening minutes. Killian Malone pulled a point back for Kilfenora only for Corofin to score four unanswered points with Cahill, Malone (2) and Ryan all raising white flags. Kilfenora did get through for a goal to reduce the margin to five points, but instead of inspiring the men in green and yellow, the goal seemed to add fuel to the Corofin fire as they went on a scoring rampage scoring 2-3 without reply to leave the outcome of the tie in no doubt. Jamie Malone completed his scoring masterclass by scoring three further points, while goals from Eoin Davoren and substitute Darren Malone from the penalty spot put the gloss on a fine victory for Corofin. Kilfenora did register the final two points of the game but they were nothing but mere consolation scores as this defeat means relegation to the Intermediate Championship for 2019. Corofin advance to Round 3 of the Championship where will they will come up against one of their own, with Lissycasey (managed by Corofin's Michael Neylon) providing the opposition. Full-Time score: Corofin 2-18 Kilfenora 1-9.
