U-21 B Football Championship, Preliminary Round    Corofin 5-10 Clooney-Quin 1-7

October 18th, 2014

A hat-trick of goals from corner-forward Aidan Collins helped Corofin easily overcome the challenge of Clooney-Quin in the opening round of the U-21 B Football Championship, played in a blustery Éire Óg on Saturday October 18th.

Despite playing against a strong breeze in the first half, Corofin were quick off the mark and opened the scoring with a goal from full-forward Eoin Davoren.
Points followed from the Kelly brothers, Gearóid (free) and Michael, before Clooney-Quin opened their account with their first point. Two goals in quick succession from Aidan Collins put Corofin firmly in the driving seat, and they added three more points through Jamie Malone, Shay Malone (free) and Gearóid Kelly to lead at the break by 3-5 to 0-1. However was it not for some wayward shooting, Corofin would have been even further ahead, but numerous goal and point chances were spurned by a host of players.

Corofin scored the opening two points of the second half through Jamie Malone and Gearóid Kelly. Clooney-Quin responded in kind with two points of their own, before Aidan Collins completed his hat-trick with his third and Corofin's fourth goal. Clooney-Quin replied with another point but Jamie Malone then put the game beyond any doubt, scoring his teams fifth and final goal when his attempt at a point deceived the Clooney-Quin goal-keeper and ended up in the back of the net. Clooney-Quin did work their way through for a goal but it was only a mere consolation as Colm Turner who was now playing in the forwards, full-back Manus Malone and midfielder David Corbett all got on the scoresheet, chipping in with a point each, as the game petered out towards its inevitable conclusion. Clooney-Quin however, did keep going to the end and scored 3 further points to leave the full-time score Corofin 5-10 Clooney-Quin 1-7.

Corofin will now meet Killimer in the Quarter-Final, with the game provisionally scheduled for Bank Holiday Monday (October 27th) in Lissycasey.
